OUGD401 PRACTICE-BASED RESEARCH WORKSHOP

We had a practice-based research workshop to help us decide how to progress with our practical aspect of the module.

Technique

  • Photography - black and white - full colour
  • Paintings - oils on canvas - ordinary paints (nose art)
  • Printed - postcards - calendars - magazines
  • Physical (not digital) - posters - magazines - calendars - postcards
  • Typography - script - serif - blocky - heavy weighted
Content
  • Photography - Black and white - full colour - magazines, esquire, Playboy - actresses - models
  • Illustrations - oil on canvas - normal paints
  • Paintings - "nose art"
  • Advertisements - Coca Cola - theatres - events - posters
  • Colours - reds - yellows - white, purity - blue
  • Symbols - happiness - teasing - dice and playing cards, nose art, lucky - lust/love - innocent, purity
Communication
  • Predominantly shows females
  • Aimed at men - workers - soldiers
  • Not minimal - bold - colourful - complex imagery
  • Aimed at lower classes - soldiers lower class - more provocative
Research/Analysis
  • Magazine covers - present day - 40's/50's
  • Calendar designs/layout - composition - elements
  • How to paint/draw/photograph pin-up girls - Gillette Elvgren - Alberto Vargas - medias/mediums - techniques - methods
Exploration/Evaluation (of how to make adverts/images, to experiment techniques/styles)

Testing (How you know one idea over another is valid and that this validity is correct, test on people)

  • Place magazine cover or calendar against modern day existing versions and get people to guess which one is out of place - evaluate differences
