OUGD401 TUTORIAL

I had a tutorial with one of my COP tutors to show them the progress I have made with my practical outcome so far. I showed them my designs for my playing cards, and what I was trying to convey by producing them. I explained that I chose playing cards because this was a method used to showcase pin-up girls on which wasn't the standard method of posters of calendars, and this is something that is still used today, playing cards. Pin-up girls were put on playing cards because they were seen as a sign of luck. I explained that I chose to include only text and no images because I wanted to show these inspirational women as role models because of what they say and what they've done rather than what they look like. I also didn't want the thing they've said to be influenced by what they look like, or people to think what they said is less significant or important because of what they look like.
I also said that I wasn't a big fan of my designs because they don't look like a pattern like the traditional playing card back designs, but more like a poster design, and I do want them to look like some sort of pattern or image so that it does still resemble the pattern on the back of playing cards, and contrasts with the number sides of the cards which are quite simple.
My tutor suggested that I did actually included photographs of these women whose quotes I have used because people may need some imagery to link the quote to the inspirational women, and that not all photographs of women are sexually inclined, and wouldn't necessarily degrade what they are saying in the quotes. This would also solve the problem of it not actually looking like a pattern because the photograph would be the pattern, as some playing cards can have photographs on the backs of them. I think this is quite a good idea as this may make the quotes even more powerful if you can see the person who has said them, this might make you think better of the person because they have overcome something that you didn't previously know.
I still want to include my drop caps lettering though, so I may just turn down the opacity so you can still see the image behind it.
