This study task asked us to consider the requirements for our practical investigation. We have to consider the following aspects of practice/research in relation to my chosen theme/question:
TECHNIQUE - Editorial Design or perhaps travel photography. Also maybe web design for the practical outcome aspect.
CONTENT - Looking into travel publications, thinking about the key principles of editorial design that make publications successful. Focusing specifically on travel publications.
COMMUNICATION - How does different styles of editorial design communicate differently?
Methods:
RESEARCH / ANALYSIS - Looking into editorial books the key principles of editorial design, perhaps aplying these to travel publications and finding out their effectiveness.
EXPLORATION / EVALUATION - Exploring different types of travel publications and the different effects the photography has on the publications 'feel'. Evaluating findings of these comparisons.
TESTING - By doing questionnaires or putting the product on trial with the public.

1.What is your research question?
To compare the differences between travel brochures and travel magazines in regards to editorial design, and how and why these differences occur.
2.Do you have a hypothesis (an assumed conclusion that you will endeavour to prove)?
I think travel brochures are a lot of heavy in information due to getting as much across to the reader as possible in as few pages as possible to save on printing costs as travel brochures are free. Travel magazines can have a much more relaxed, experimental editorial design due to potentially long production times, and having to pay for the magazine.
3.How will your practical work relate to your written work (synthesis)?
Potentially redesign a travel brochure in the style of a travel magazine, to try and make travel brochures more appealing and have an aesthetic 'style', trying to get them back into use by more people.
4.What methods will you use to research, develop, create and test your work?
Analysing different kinds of travel brochures and travel magazines to compare and contrast their editorial design. Research in books to find out what makes 'good' editorial design. Test my product by giving it to people and seeing if they find it more effective than the original travel brochure.
5.Provide a proposed timeline for your work to completion (consider carefully whether you will need access to college facilities).
- Research essay before, during and directly after Christmas ready for the draft submission in January
- Once the draft submission is in then start work on the design on the practical outcome
- Once the draft is back make additional changes immediately or as soon as possible
- Continue working on the practical outcome until the deadline in April
