We had a critique for our practical outcome for Context of Practice, to basically confirm our thoughts from the last session, and to come up with a solid idea. I presented my mind maps I produced in the last session, elaborating on different points I felt were more key.
I then asked my group three questions:
1) Do my ideas relate to both my essay and the topic - gender representation and advertising?
2) Should I put the pin-up girl in todays society, or stick to the powerful, modern women - todays version of the pin-up.
3) Should I go down the modern day, powerful woman pin-up idea, or the showing how women are judged by their appearances?
I got some really useful and productive feedback based on my descriptions of my ideas and these questions.
Someone said that I should identify what the modern day pin-up girl actually is, what examples of her are there in todays society, and then apply that, her look or her photographs to modern technology. This modern day technology could be an app on your phone, or a zine maybe, like a profile on each key woman.
It was also mentioned that I shouldn't just bring the traditional pin-up girl into today's setting, such as by doing the hair and make up and posing in pin-up poses, as this isn't showing how she has progressed and developed through time, and that the pin-up girl is still about her looks today.
If I wanted to produce images of pin-up girls, one of my peers said that her flat mate does illustration and has been drawing pin-ups recently, and suggested a collaboration with an illustration student as I said I didn't feel confident drawing people.
Someone said that they like the matchbox card idea that I had, and suggested that I could have a series of matchbox cards, or later I thought of playing cards, but instead of having images of pin-up girls, modern day or traditional, I could use quotes from the modern day pin-up girls, as this would emphasise their impact and inspirational qualities, but would be more about what they've done or how they've influenced rather than what they look like, which is a more contemporary approach, and highlights that women are becoming less objective, and more independent. It was suggested that I could play with different typeface and type layout, making it much more contemporary.
One thing I found common whilst I was discussing my ideas and receiving feedback, was that not many people actually knew what the modern day pin-up girl was, which shows just how much she has strayed from her traditional image, how she isn't popular anymore, or at least not in the sense that she originally was.
This gave me a lot to think about for my practical outcome, and thinking about it I think I am going to produce some form of cards, perhaps the cards used to stiffen match boxes, or maybe the back pattern on playing cards, or the whole playing cards, including the box, using quotes from women I think are the modern day version of the pin-up girl, playing around with typography that I think suits them as a person, or perhaps the same typeface, maybe even going down a more abstract route and making little illustrations with words used from their quotes from the person.
