IDEA:
Produce a mini publication using content from Jet2 Holidays brochure, the layout from Boat magazine and the binding of Cyprien Gaillard zine.
WHY:
Boat layout will make the content look more visually appealing so people will be more inclined to read it. Bind Cyprien Gaillard as it's interesting and interactive, making it different to it's competitors. Also, being a fortnightly publication, not meant to treasure it and be a work of art, gives it a throw away feel, as deals and holiday styles change frequently. Maybe use gloss stock though to emphasise images.
TARGET MARKET:
Mainly younger people, as older already use travel brochures, try and get youngsters to connect with travel brochures whilst not alienating the older people.
DIGITAL LINK:
Instagram feed for all the photos? Website for the content of the brochure which changes fortnightly to reflect the current publication content.
FEEDBACK:
Q1: How can I make sure I don't alienate the older generation?
A:
- Ensure the design is readable and professional but not following trends? Consider the use of language eg. informative, not humorous.
- Not too bold fonts and not too hectic
- Legibility
- Legibility of keeping the text as clear as possible not to rely on it being too trendy and contemporary
- Legibility/readability and serif fonts
- Try and keep traditional elements and legible body copy
- Maybe rethink the binding method - this would be quite fiddly and not all would appreciate it.
- Legibility. Good use of hierarchy for information.
Q2: Do you think the bind is effective and relevant?
A:
- I feel that the bind will devalue the holidays. They describe themselves as having 'package holidays you can trust' the binding does not give this impression.
- I agree with this ^^. However it does fit with the idea of it being fortnightly. It makes it feel more personal. I like it!
- Like the aesthetic of bind not sure about it's relevance.
- May be too complex and off putting
- I don't think it would be appreciated.
- I don't see the bind working as a clean after effect however it is interesting and could work really well.
- Perhaps something more sturdy
Q3: What do you think of the digital link? (website/instagram)
A:
- Relevant as most young people use the internet to find holidays so this will grab their attention. People also like to show off their holidays online.
- Far too culturally relevant to miss!! Would expand the audience.
- Definitely try and incorporate social media too.
- Definitely relevant - most people would want to see a website for more info/potentially book a holiday
- Relevant as nearly everyone uses social media
- Yes! It gets younger audience more involved.
Q4: What do you think of the fortnightly issue idea?
A:
- Relevant to find new deals
- Yes I think this could be good as holidays change and can be seasonal: skiing is more likely in winter, summer holiday editions
- I'd suggest monthly if it's going to be high quality and expensive
- Yes - look at 'secret escapes' they email you when anything crops up after signing up. This could be a good way to gain following on social media and subscribers - would you charge for the brochure?
- Yes - holidays are seasonal. Or even every month
- Fortnight could become repetitive however fits todays market.
Q5: Is there anything else you'd like to suggest/comment on?
A:
- Really good idea!
- Really interesting combination of features, I would really like to see how this will work
- Great idea however think of it's expense producing it this way - would you have to charge for the publication? If so how would you get people involved?
- Good idea just think of the costs for producing it
- Really interesting idea. Perhaps re-think the binding but apart from that it sounds good!
Evaluation:
This feedback session has been really valuable to me as it shed real light on my designs and whether they are feasible or not. It also highlighted areas that I need to think about more, rather than just jumping straight into designing it such as the digital link aspect, the legibility and hierarchy of text, and also the bind. I should also think about how frequently it is going to be released, fortnightly or monthly, and how this should impact on it's production, for example if I choose fortnightly it should be off a lesser quality to reflect the cost of producing it twice as much. Again I should think about the cost of production in general, and if it is going to cost a fair amount to produce I should consider how I am going to advertise it and make people want to buy it rather than pick it up for free.
