OUGD501 PRACTICAL IDEA DEVELOPMENT & MOCK UPS

Section of Jet2Holidays to produce the publication on: THE ALGARVE & MADEIRA
WHY: Becuse it's the right length section for the publication, and is somewhere of growing popularity that hasn't reached sun, sex and suspicious parents level, and probably never will hopefully. It is also a very photogenic area, and has things for both the younger and older generation, is basically a good all-rounder.

IN THE CURRENT BROCHURE there are 8 double spreads/16 pages. 24 hotels are featured, and there's a starting info page about the area.

BOOK:
- Perfect bound, so you can tear out bits that you like...or perforated edges? More artistic/effort made bind - nice to look at.
- Gloss stock - make photographs look to their best. Give higher quality feel, maybe thin gloss stock though to save costs. Double sided printer colours aren't as good as the standard printers, and you can also only print on certain stocks, which I must find out which stocks if I want to print double sided. An alternative could be concertina fold which avoids printing double sided so there's a larger choice of stock and higher print quality. A mock up should be made.

Concertina mock up:

Concertina stretched out. Should it be read on both sides of just one side?

How it would look bound. Kinda odd and you need a lot of paper to make a large page size book due to the binding method.

Where pages have been stuck together they're twice as thick as the front and back cover. This may pose issues for how to produce the cover to ensure it is just as if not more sturdy.
Conclusion:
After discussing this mock up with my peers I decided that I won't be using this binding method as it isn't commercially viable, as it isn't easy to produce on a larger scale, and would also be costly due to the glue and the amount of stock needed.

Other mock ups:

Number one:

This was a development of the concertina fold, and coincidentally is really similar to Cyprien Gaillard's fold which was ruled out, only simplified. A sheet of paper is folded in half, and then placed next to other folded pieces of paper and thing I used selotape to attach them together, however if I actually produced this I would use perfect binding. I stuck the two edges that weren't folded together rather than all of the folded ends together, so the pages are double the thickness.

You can see that you can see inside the folded pages, perhaps space for a hidden pattern or competition or offer? With all the content on the clearly visible pages though, this means the older generation won't have to faff around figuring how to open it, the information will just be clearly visible to them. But something extra can be found for those who are curious.
Number one expanded:

This is a larger page version of the previous mock up, as I was pleased with how it works. I also experimented with content additions on the folded sides to see how they would look.

Pattern inside. I used a repeat pattern so that it would make it easier to produce, and the smaller illustrations reflect things about the holidays such as the sun, palm trees, smiley faces, clouds because sometimes cloud. I produced it using a colour as it would be coloured when I actually produce it, and I like the way it lights up the inside folds, and how the colour pops through even when it's closed.

I also tried just a flat colour, as a pattern may be too confusing, and a flat colour fits well with the minimalist nature of the layout. Although maybe a combination? Or a coloured border? Flat colour does seem rather plain, and with a pattern you can tear out the pages and use the pattern as a poster or wrapping paper for small objects etc.

I also thought about including a section where you could win something or get a special subscription offer, or maybe a URL link to a hidden part of the Jet2 website which you get special deals on...something extra that you only find once you really get into the publication. However I did wonder if the older generation wouldn't benefit from this as they may find it hard to get into the inside of the folded pages, and would this put them at a disadvantage?
Conclusion:
The pattern will aim to be screen printed and consist of one colour to cut costs but also to make it as simple as can be. I will however need to research how screen printing works on glossy paper as this may affect either my stock choice or whether I screen print at all. I should also find out whether it is best to screen print before I digital print or vice versa. Impacts of screen print ink going through the digital print printers may damage the printers. The publication will be the same size as Cyprien Gaillard as this is a nice size that fits in your hand well but still allows for large, high quality photograph elements. I will need to find out exactly what size it is though, as it will need to be just smaller than A5 so that the spread will fit nicely on an A4 piece of paper without having to scale down. This will also make printing much more economical as well.
After the mock ups with this bind worked so well I will use this binding method. The next stage will be to produce the pattern for the back and get feedback on what offer/competition if anything to put on the folded inside part. I should also start organising the inside content as well, photographs and text etc, potentially using lorem ipsum, however I can take a lot of text from the original brochure.
